Osteopathy and chronic pelvic pain

Trained in pain neuroscience, Daniel Bontems is the lead osteopath of Réseau Douleur Paris, a multidisciplinary group of doctors and allied health professionals specialising in gynaecology, urology, vascular surgery, visceral surgery and pain medicine. He also speaks there, notably on myofascial syndromes.

His work is a complement to medical follow-up, never a substitute for it.

Pain that cuts across several specialties

Chronic pelvic and perineal pain is one of the most complex situations in healthcare: multifactorial and often poorly understood, it cuts across several medical specialties without always finding an answer within any single one of them.

It is precisely in this space that someone is needed to make the link between specialties. Being the osteopathic eye within a medical team allows Daniel Bontems to bring different perspectives together, to test his hypotheses against those of specialist doctors and to keep refining his tools.

What osteopathy contributes

The work focuses on tension chains (fasciae, ligamentous and visceral structures) involved in complex painful myofascial syndromes, a subject on which he gives talks within the Réseau Douleur Paris.

This reading is informed by pain neuroscience and by an understanding of micronutritional biology and biochemistry: chronic inflammation, deficiencies.

Collegial work, with the sharing of reports, hypotheses and perspectives, is at the heart of this care.

I have endometriosis: how can osteopathy support me?

Endometriosis requires gynaecological diagnosis and follow-up. Osteopathy works alongside this, on what keeps lower pelvic pain going: tension in the tissues and fasciae, mobility of the pelvis and hips, effects on the perineum, on bowel function and on circulation in the lower pelvis. The work is done in liaison with the gynaecologist who follows you.

My pain is constant, or radiates to the genitals: is this a reason to consult?

Yes, as a complement to medical follow-up. This pain often has several components, muscular, nervous and visceral, which the consultation seeks to distinguish. New pain, or pain that changes in character, warrants medical advice first.

My pelvic pain comes with digestive problems: is there a link?

It is common. The organs of the lower pelvis share attachments, nerves and circulation; long-standing constipation or visceral tension can sustain pelvic pain, and vice versa. The assessment examines these links.

Do I need to be referred by a doctor to consult?

It is not compulsory, but it is common in these situations. An established diagnosis and ongoing follow-up allow more precise support and better coordination with the medical team.

What is the Réseau Douleur Paris?

A multidisciplinary group bringing together doctors and allied health professionals specialising in gynaecology, urology, vascular surgery, visceral surgery and pain medicine. Daniel Bontems is involved as designated osteopath and as a speaker.

Is a consultation suitable after giving birth?

Yes. Support with pain associated with postpartum perineal disorders is one of the reasons to consult, as a complement to gynaecological follow-up and prescribed pelvic floor rehabilitation.
